Lego and Robotics
To foster interest in engineering, Lego-Robotics Camps are designed to introduce basic programming concepts to children entering K to G4 through a series of extremely engaging robotics projects. Powered by LabVIEW, a user-friendly icon based, graphical drag and drop programming environment is used to implement the curriculum. Besides programming, building executive skills, problem solving, as well as team building are also essential objectives of the camp.
Students are divided into lower and upper groups, entering K-G2 and G2-4, respectively. Students entering G2 with previous Lego experience are good candidates to join the upper grade group. The camps operate from 6/15 to 8/14. All camps are scheduled from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Extended care, with structured indoor and outdoor activities, is available during before-camp and after-camp hours. Please see Daily Schedule for more details.
K-G2 Camps
Pre-Programming (6/15-6/19)
Through projects, demonstrations, and games, students will be introduced to basic engineering and programming concepts. Mechanical science principles related to gears, levers, pulleys, wheels, and axles will be introduced to campers through the exciting Lego building projects. Basic design concepts and building techniques, which is the basic essential of robotics, will be introduced. Youngsters will learn to read graphic instructions and guided to apply those concepts to program their robots.
Jr. Lego-Robotics: Adventures Stories (6/29-7/2)
The engineer apprentice will learn to read programming icons, and follow graphic instructions to create working models for the robotic projects, namely, Airplane Rescue, Giant Escape, and Sailboat Storm. To enhance their robotics-related science concepts, they will also be given ample opportunities to work with simple machines, such as gears, wheels, axles, levers, and pulleys.
Jr. Lego-Robotics: Wild Animals (7/20-7/24)
The engineer apprentice will learn to read programming icons, and follow graphic instructions to create working models for the robotic projects, namely, Hungry Alligator, Roaring Lion, and Flying Bird. To enhance their robotics-related science concepts, they will also be given ample opportunities to work with simple machines, such as gears, wheels, axles, levers, and pulleys.
Jr. Lego-Robotics: Soccer Player (8/3-8/7)
The engineer apprentice will learn to read programming icons, and follow graphic instructions to create working models for the robotic projects, namely, Goal Kicker, Goalkeeper, and Cheerful Fans. To enhance their robotics-related science concepts, they will also be given ample opportunities to work with simple machines, such as gears, wheels, axles, levers, and pulleys.
G2-4 Camps
Introduction to Programming (6/15-6/19)
The engineering design process is the key concept to introduce through observing and investigating simple machines: gears, wheels, axles, levers and pulleys. They will learn about the functions of different basic Lego bricks and how to use them to build proportional, balanced, well simulated robotic designs. The junior engineers will learn to program, design, and create a working model with the icon-based Lego software, powered by LabView.
Lego-Robotics: Adventures Stories (6/29-7/2)
Application of the engineering design process would be introduced and strengthened through problem solving for robotic characters in the themes of the Airplane Rescue, Giant Escape, and Sailboat Storm. The junior engineers will learn to program, design, and create a working model with the icon-based Lego software, powered by LabView. They will be guided to hone their robotics skills through more in-depth exploration of essential simple machines of gears, wheels, axles, levers, and pulleys.
Lego-Robotics: Wild Animals (7/13-7/17)
Application of the engineering design process would be introduced and strengthened through problem solving for robotic characters of the Hungry Alligator, Roaring Lion, and Flying Bird. The junior engineers will learn to program, design, and create a working model with the icon-based Lego software, powered by LabView. They will be guided to hone their robotics skills through more in-depth exploration of essential simple machines of gears, wheels, axles, levers, and pulleys.
Lego-Robotics: Soccer Player (7/27-7/31)
Application of the engineering design process would be introduced and strengthened through problem solving for robotic characters of the Goal Kicker, Goalkeeper, and Cheerful Fans. The junior engineers will learn to program, design, and create a working model with the icon-based Lego software, powered by LabView. They will be guided to hone their robotics skills through more in-depth exploration of essential simple machines of gears, wheels, axles, levers, and pulleys.
